All around the world, Obafemi Awolowo University is known by all and sundry for its excellence.
Located in Ile-Ife, South-western Nigeria, OAU as it is popularly called is one of the best universities in Nigeria and the African continent.
Often times, its acronym-OAU has been said to mean other things, chief of which are Oba Awon University and Oba Adaniduro University.
Is OAU Oba Awon University or Oba Adaniduro University?
Subsequently, I’ll be discussing the arguments of the advocates of both positions.
The view of those who feel OAU means Oba Awon University.
• Amazing architectural designs
Masterminded by Arieh Sharon, the architectural designs on OAU campus will take your breath away. These kind of buildings are among the very best in the world.
• One of the first universities in Nigeria: When a new idea launches, the name of the first set of brands to implement the idea is not easily forgotten. OAU is one of the first universities established in Nigeria. Only few universities in Nigeria can boast of being established ahead of the Great Ife.
• The school’s renowned alumni.
In every career space you can think of all across the world, you’ll surely find a student of Great Ife. Some notable OAU alumni include Femi Otedola, Fireboy DML, Abike Dabiri-Erewa, DaAll Abiodun, Jimi Agbaje and Dr Akinwunmi Adeshina, to mention but a few.
Furthermore, the numerous extra-curricular activities that take place on OAU campus are such a thing of beauty. Various concerts and shows, not to forget the traditions like the Aro. These kind of premium package can’t find a better home than Oba Awon University.
With all that has been said, some folks still argue that OAU is not Oba Awon University and that it is Oba Adaniduro University. Some of their reasons include:
• Slow academic calendar.
While other schools in the nation are speeding up their academic calendars to counter the effect of the COVID-19 pandemic, OAU seems to be having a hard time dealing with the problem as her students claim to have been in the same level since 2019.
• Disruption in academic calendar
As of the time of preparing this article, OAU is shut down because of a protest which rocked the school on 1st October, 2021. “This is one of many frequent disruptions the school has been subjected to.”
• OAU struggle
OAU lecturers are said to be strict and very good at setting”hard” examinations. This makes it difficult to scale through the university unhurt, either in part of in full. There will surely be at least one course that will be bent on extending your stay in the school.
