Meet The Most Powerful Mages In The History Of K-drama

Share

Every fan of Korean Drama still can’t get over the thrill that Alchemy of Souls brought. The Hong sisters outdid themselves this time after their last script, Hotel de Luna. We are already anticipating Alchemy of Souls Season 2 and want December to quickly come, most especially we can’t forget our favorite mages from the Four Families who struck our hearts with their captivating actions.

Although Alchemy of Souls is one of the fantasy-themed Korean dramas we’ve never seen before with a slight resemblance to Chinese movies, it has opened our eyes to the possibilities of fictional characters in other k-dramas. We can rate these fictional characters as mages.

Mages are those who possess great power and are either born with it or achieved this high level of strength via training under a master. Other k-dramas have mages(characters with great power) and we have ranked them. Meet the Top 10 most powerful mages k-drama has produced so far:

10. MYUL MANG: DOOM AT YOUR SERVICE

Have you watched Doom at your Service? If not, you should probably check it out because it has the fantasy-romance vibe that comes with all magical Korean dramas.

In this drama, our handsome Korean Oppa Seo In-guk plays the role of the cunning Myul Mang who is a deity called ‘Doom’. Wherever he goes, whenever he breathes or takes any action, bad things always happen. All he has to do is just breathe or snap his fingers, and negative things immediately happen. However, Myul Mang falls into a twisted relationship with a terminally ill woman, Tak Dong Kyung( Park Bo Young). Myul Mang was portrayed as an evil but an extremely powerful god who could control death.

9. LEE YEON: TALE OF THE NINE-TAILED

Who says mages/gumihos can’t fall in love? The tail of the Nine-Tailed is a story of Lee Yeon(Lee Dong Wook), a very ancient and powerful gumiho who was in love with his reincarnated love, Nam Ji Ah(Jo Bo Ah). Lee Yeon seemed quite funny but those red eyes of his are to fear. No one dares to stand in his way of getting whatever he wants, he even had to cross a bridge where knives were thrown at him as a punishment for love. Lee Yeon is one of the most powerful mages in k-drama, Do you want to know why? Go watch the movie ASAP and see!

8. RI-EUL: SOUND OF MAGIC

Am I the only that thinks that Ji Chang Wook portrays his role so well every single time? We all that he’s quite famous for starring in action k-dramas like K2, Healer, and others but he definitely is on our list of powerful mages. Ri-eul is a magician who meets a poor girl, Yoon Ahn-yi(Choi Sung Eun) who is in a very pitiful situation with no parental support. When Yoon Ahn-yi meets RI-EUL, she doubted his magic because he seemed too secretive and mysterious but later their journey together led to new adventures and romance. Judging by his level of magic in this fantasy drama, he is powerful.

7. SO MUN, DO HA-RA, GA MO TAK, CHOO MAE-OK: THE UNCANNY COUNTER

The action-packed supernatural k-drama was full of twists and turns. So Mun(Jo Byeong-kyu) is a young disabled high schooler who aims to be a comic writer with his friends but he got hit with a spirit and gained some abilities. He later met other people like him with different abilities, Do Ha-ra( Kim Se-Jeong) who can predict or detect demonic activity, Ga Mo-tak(Yoo Jun-sung) who is the Korean Hulk, and Cho MAE-OK( Yeom Hye-ran) with the ability to heal people. So Mun and the other counters were powerful enough to defeat the strongest villain that killed several counters. It is no doubt they had a high level of skill and strength!

6. HA BAEK: BRIDE OF THE WATER GOD

Ha Baek(Nam Joo Hyuk-) is almost like Lee Yeon from Tale of the nine-tailed but much stronger. Ha Baek is a water God, almost like the mages in Alchemy of Souls. He leaves the god realm in search of divine stones but then meets a psychiatrist, So Ah( Shin Se-Kyung) who is also an of the god servants, and fell in love with her whilst staying at her place. The level of power shown by Ha Baek is definitely enough to rate him as a strong mage.

5. SOH ON GONG: A KOREAN ODYSSEY

In a world where evil exists, Son On Gong(Lee Seung-gi) tries to navigate his love life with Jin Seon Mi( Oh Yeon Seo). Son On Gong is a monkey king who’s friends with the Devil King Woo but bound to protect Seon Mi because of a bracelet she had. Although he was powerful, the Geumganggo bracelet was more powerful and could enslave him so that whoever wears it, he has to automatically fall in love and protect the person. All through the drama, Soh On Gong is seen following and hovering protectively around his beloved but when he gets angry even the Devil King stays away because of how powerful he is.

4. SHIN WOO-YEO: MY ROOMMATE IS A GUMIHO

The legendary nine-tailed fox(gumiho) is a myth but in this k-drama, it came to life. Shin Woo-yeo(Jang Ki-Yong) is a nine hundred and ninety-nine-year-old fox who needs human energy in his fox bead before he turns human but he meets a young lady, Lee Dam(Hyeri) who accidentally swallows the bead. Woo-yeo had to keep her close to ensure that he doesn’t lose his chance at becoming human. He later got the bead but also fell in love. One of the scenes where he revealed himself to Lee Dam as a fox was scary because he was huge. He had other abilities like being able to transform into another person, transform and even teleport. I’m ranking him as one of the most powerful characters I’ve ever seen in Korean drama.

3. JANG MAN-WOL: HOTEL DE LUNA

If you had told me that IU could pull this role off, I would argue. Jang Man-wol( Lee Ji-Eun) is a thousand-year-old ghost who is punished for committing a mortal sin by running a hotel that consoles ghosts. She later meets Ku Chan-seong’s father and makes a contract with him. Ku Chan-Seong became the manager of her hotel and helps him absolve her grudges. There are captivating scenes where she punished ghosts scarily and changed things with a flick of her finger. She is a really powerful woman who showed her capabilities by protecting her beloved, although she later had to go to the afterlife.

2. KIM SHIN: GOBLIN- A LONELY AND GREAT GOD

I recommend watching this drama because it is one of the most rated fantasy k-drama. Kim Shin(Gong Yoo), a well-decorated general lost his family to a jealous king and was forced to die but rather than dying, he became a goblin who was destined to live forever. Kim Shin began to search for ways to die because he was tired of living and meets Ji Eun-Tak Kim Go-Eun who is his bride and has the power to kill him. There were a lot of comical scenes and he was even roommates with a grim reaper Wang Yeo ( Lee Dong-Wook). Kim Shin had different abilities e.g teleportation but later had to face the loss of his beloved.

1. NAKSU: ALCHEMY OF SOULS

Finally, our number one is Naksu, the powerful sorceress and assassin who possessed the body of a high priestess and was also a soul shifter. That combo is enough to rate her as the most powerful mage we’ve ever seen. Naksu mastered Tansu and was able to reach Jang UK and she also reached chisu stage without being a Songrim or Cheombugwan mage.
