ASUU Resumption: 10 Reasons Nigerian Students Don’t Want To Resume

Share

Before the ASUU strike was called off or suspended on the 14th of October, every student affected by the forced holiday had relented on the hope of resumption this year (2022). To almost every Nigerian student’s dismay, they have been summoned back to their classes before they thought of necessary school preps. As happy as students are supposed to be, there are still many reasons why several students don’t want to resume after endless months out of school. This content will evaluate 10 reasons why Nigerian students don’t want to resume

1. Financial Handicap

The country’s economy is not exactly giving a green light for the expense every student would incur. The dates for some school resumption are many steps ahead of the space needed to gather the financial needs for school. Parents and guardians will feel the pressure as other expenses and schools have since been out of the budget.

2. Side Hustle

The 8-month strike was unexpected, and through the few months of the onset, many students were idle and settled into side hustles. By the time the strike was dissolved, students had no choice but to go back to school— many will have to forsake their side hustling and return to their long-term deprived academic environs. The unbearable part is when the source of income has to be suspended with the strike.

3. Timing

The period the miracle of God took every student that had to stop anticipating the suspension of the ASUU strike by surprise would be cited as ‘total bad timing. The middle of the year might have been perfect, but 2022 is drawing its curtain in less than three months, and every successful ongoing plan that was not academic would stop. What’s more, several students have no spirits left to journey that phase this year again— this time should have been when students look forward to going home.

4. Landlord Drama

The students that had rents of places for their stay in or nearest school had their annual rents exhausted without living in the apartments due to the prolonged strike. Their absence for those months was draining their paid rent, and going back to school to their various apartments will not be possible unless they deposit another payment for their stay. As bad as the financial state of sponsors/ and students themselves, it’s a loss. Landlords are dramatic when you owe them rent, and no student is ready for such unpleasantries.

5. Jampacked Calendar

One of the adverse effects of the prolonged strike is the drawback in academic schedules meant for dormant sessions. Any school would want to make up for lost months, and students are left to worry about the hassle of the pile of academic studies they would need to cover in a very abrupt period— as some schools are releasing their calendar for the session, belonging students can guess what’s waiting to welcome them to school

6. Exam Pressure

When the ASUU strike commenced, some universities had to stop academic activities leaving the sessions unconcluded. Some schools are in the middle of their exams before the strike, but as it has been suspended, they would face the exams again and, this time, almost unprepared. The schools starting new sessions will no doubt rush the calendar year and halve it to finish the session with exams. Only students in these affected universities can relate to all these bases.

7. Academic Stress

Considering the above mentions, students are looking forward to almost the toughest academic year. The circumstances bonded to the academic activities would rather increase stress to survive and to achieve the purpose of the academic pursuit. That is not what students are ready to encounter— the hours of lectures, the little time to study and fend for their health in the short run on campus.

8. Inflation

The cost of everything students would need to get with money is going to shoot up, and the transport cost for a start, traveling to school will eat up money for sure. School won’t be the least merciful either; the things you’ve known for their regular price would cost a bit more. Almost everywhere you’d say, but students know how different it is purchasing in school and outside. The high cost of school items is another headache the students want to avoid.

9. Basic Sustenance

The strike has been called off or suspended; now what? Students should just hop on the next bus and journey to school without the basic needs; foodstuffs for instance? No one was hoping the universities would resume again this year, and that said, no readily available source of sustenance to help students survive in school— some parents will have to go by any means to provide these for their undergraduate child

10. Christmas

Quite disturbing to see the new academic calendar and correlate it with the regular annual calendar— students that are Christians are at a disadvantage as ASUU suspended the strike. With the festive period coming in less than 2 months, Christmas and studies are not shaking hands. The time lost leaves little slots for another holiday for the Xmas festival.

By vote, several students would support being given more time to get everything they need to prepare for the weighted academic year. Of course, there is happiness that the ASUU strike has been suspended, but it’s lesser than the worries of ‘hows’ when it comes to the resumption of universities this soon. Do you agree, or are you hundred percent ready for school?
