“Sport and struggle” as fondly tagged, Obafemi Awolowo University can be regarded as one of the toughest universities in Nigeria. when it comes to seeing shege, no university comes close.
OAU is one of the few Universities that rarely produce first-class students and the reason for this is best known to the lecturers. Thus a ‘great’ institution that has over the years developed a culture of glorifying students’ failure.
As an OAU student, it is expected for you to cry at least 3-7 times per semester, an average OAU student sees 10-20 shege per day. The 46th convocation ceremony of this great citadel of learning took place last week at the University’s biggest sitting capacity, amphitheater and even with premium shege some students graduated with flying colors. IOI previously reported that not more than 130 students out of 5852 graduated with a first-class.
Several awards have been handed out to the best graduating students of various departments, however, some departments fielded more standout performers than others. Below are the Top 10 departments with the highest number of first-class honorees in OAU.
10. Department Of Foreign Languages:
The Department of Foreign Languages comes in ninth place with 4 first-class honorees overall, out of 65 graduands. They offer a range of specialized studies, including French, German and Portuguese.
It has been a very colorful event with graduands adorning their graceful convocation gowns and hats. Although, they’ve all had their fair share of twists and turns on the popular “Ogbafemi” campus because graduating as a student of this university is no small feat. It takes grit and determination coupled with several stretched nights of reading at the academics, hustling for seats at those grueling 7 a.m. classes, and straining one’s ears to at least hear that lecturer who prefers to dictate notes in class.
9. Department Of Electronic And Electrical Engineering:
Elect-Elect, as it is fondly called on the OAU campus, is the third department with 5 first-class honorees out of a total of 85 graduating students. Hats off to the students in that department.
8. Computer Science And Engineering:
The Department of Computer Science and Engineering takes sixth place alongside the other departments with 5 first-class honorees in total, out of 52 graduands. Without a doubt, the future of “Tech Bros” and “Tech Sis” is in safe hands. The department of computer science produced the overall best graduating student in the Faculty of Technology “Malachi”. This department offers a range of specialized programs, including computer systems engineering, software engineering, and computer networks.
7. Philosophy:
Five first-class honorees put this department in sixth place overall among a total of 83 graduating students. This department provides a variety of specialized programs such as ethics and logic.
6. Economics:
The Department of Economics also takes sixth place with 6 first-class honorees from 109 graduands. Offering a range of specialized programs, including microeconomics, macroeconomics, and econometrics.
5. Chemical Engineering:
Coming in fifth place is the department of Chemical Engineering having 7 first-class honorees in total, out of 83 graduands. Students in this department typically focus on the application of physical and life sciences, along with mathematics, to the process of converting raw materials or chemicals into more useful or valuable forms.
4. Family, Nutrition, And Consumer Sciences:
The Department of Family, Nutrition and Consumer Sciences comes in fourth with 9 first-class honorees out of 88 graduands. They also offer a range of specialized programs, including food science and technology, human nutrition, and consumer science.
3. Microbiology:
This department produced the overall best graduating student at the 46th Convocation ceremony. Mary Olayinka Oladokun a student in the department of microbiology, emerged as the overall best graduating student at the 46th convocation ceremony with a 4.92 CGPA. The Department of Microbiology takes third place with 11 first-class honorees from a total of 298 graduating students. Medical microbiology, industrial microbiology, and environmental microbiology are just a few of the specialized studies offered by this department.
2. Law LL.B:
The Faculty of Law, Obafemi Awolowo University Ile-Ife Nigeria was established as one of the first foundation faculties of the then University of Ife. The Faculty of Law LL.B is topping this list as the second department with the highest number of first-class honorees (2022) with a total of 12 first-class honorees out of 212 graduands. They provide a range of specialized programs, including business law, criminal law, and international law.

With 29 first-class honorees, the Department of Management and Accounting tops the list as the department with the highest number of first-class honorees In OAU with a total of 264 graduating students. This department offers a range of specialized programs, including financial accounting, management information systems, and strategic management. The Department of Management and Accounting can be no doubt crowned as the department that produces the highest number of first-class honorees each year.
