We live in the golden era of Nigerian private universities and we have many things to say about them. Private universities in Nigeria have long been known for the enrollment of students with rich parents. The only way to get into these schools is money and a lot of it! But, these schools do not only get their fees by charging big bucks; Nigerians with means pay for these schools because they know that the quality of education is better than what you would get at Nigeria’s public or state-owned universities. Many high-class students come from all over Nigeria just for the sake of schooling their kids at private schools. But this list is about seeing which ones are the most expensive and what makes them special.

Here we ranked (10) of which we believe are the most expensive in Nigeria. And if you’re a private university student yourself, watch out for your school.

1.  Pan-Atlantic University

Here we have the Pan-Atlantic University sitting impressively in the first rank. Originally the Lagos Business School, the PAU has a well-earned reputation as a global institution offering quality and top-notch education. The school fees currently stand at a whooping sum of 2.5 Million naira. Students from this university are very vocal about the standard of their school, and never fail to let the general public know on social platforms, most especially Tik-Tok.

2.  Nile University Of Nigeria

The Nile University of Nigeria was established in 2009 in Abuja as a private university and was approved by the Nigerian university commission. It is well-known and commonly referred to as a school for the rich because the University’s school fees are said to be quite expensive to the average Nigerian. Due to that, the student population is quite low.

The University offers a range of courses cutting across various departments like Law, Medicine, Engineering, Science and Technology. Admission into The Nile University is not competitive, as there are only a few out of thousands of Nigerians who can afford to enroll.

3.  Baze University

Baze University is a private university located in Abuja. It was established by Yusuf Dattia-Baba Ahmed in 2011. One of the major aims of this University is to provide university education with British standards in Nigeria at half the cost it takes abroad.

Baze University has produced a lot of influential people in Nigerian Society; quite a good number of politicians bagged their degrees from here. They currently charge around 3.1 Million Naira for school fees.

4.  American University Of Nigeria

A private University in Nigeria, the American University of Nigeria is Africa’s first development university, offering an American-style liberal arts higher education with both international graduate and undergraduate programs.

It was founded in 2004 by Atiku Abubakar, a former Vice President of Nigeria, and is accredited by the Nigerian National Universities Commission. In fourth Place, the American University of Nigeria charges 2 Million Naira as school fees.


5.  Afe Babalola University, Ado-Ekiti

Afe Babalola or ABUAD as it is referred to as is a private university located in Ado-Ekiti, Ekiti State. Founded by a renowned Nigerian lawyer and philanthropist, Aare Afe Babalola in 2009, it offers academic programs in six colleges: Law, Medicine and Health Sciences, Engineering, Social and Management Sciences, Sciences, and Post-Graduate studies.

Students of ABUAD are known to be very posh and elegant, displaying their financial status both intellectually and socially. As one of the most expensive universities in Nigeria, the school fees are around 2.5 Million Naira.

6.  Caleb University

Caleb University is a private university located in Imota, Lagos, Nigeria. Frequently ranked among the top (10) most sought-after private universities in Nigeria, the university offers a diverse number of degrees.

7.  Bowen University

Bowen University is a private Baptist Christian Nigerian University owned and managed by the Nigerian Baptist Convention. It is located in Iwo, Osun State. It is regarded as the first-ever Baptist institution in Africa. The university was founded on the 17th of July, 2001, by the Nigerian Baptist Convention.

Regarded among the most expensive tertiary institutions in Nigeria, the University charges school fees of 950,000 Naira upward.

8.  Babcock University

Ranked eighth on this list, Babcock University is a private Christian co-ed university, founded by the Seventh Day Adventist church in Nigeria. Babcock had its first set of graduates from the Ben Carson School of Medicine.

The University was named after an American Missionary, David C. Babcock. The charges for school fees are 780,000 Naira.

9.  Covenant University, Ogun State

Listed as one of the best Universities in Nigeria, Covenant University is a private Christian University. They belong to the NUC, the association of commonwealth universities, and the living faith church across various parts of the world. They definitely deserve a spot on this list with their degree programmes and expensive school fees.

10.  Lead City University

We have here on this list at the tenth spot, the Lead City. This University can most definitely not be considered least in any context at all. The University was founded in 2005 by Tunji Olaopa and is situated in Ibadan. The school fees are currently at 625, 000 Naira per session.

Overall, it is perfectly fine for any student to want the best of everything at their university. After all, universities are meant for improving one’s experience of higher learning. That said, one must take into consideration a number of things to choose a university to study in, in Nigeria. Our list would also help parents find the best private universities they can afford. It is believed that the standards of education in Nigerian private universities cannot compete with famous public universities abroad; however, we believe that this is absolutely not true. There are a number of specialties that you could study in a Nigerian private university that a government university can’t possibly offer.
