Dark Tuesday in Obafemi Awolowo University

The Obafemi Awolowo University community was thrown into mourning on Monday, April 10, 2023, following the tragic death of an Extra Year student of Civil Engineering, Okoli Ahize. According to reports, he was alleged to have stolen a mobile phone at Awolowo Hall of Residence. Subsequently, the Awoites EXECUTIVES paraded him and he was ultimately surrendered to the Union’s security committee around 11 pm yesterday. It is reported that he was subjected to brutal torture overnight,  he was later rushed to the hospital where he was declared dead.

Eyewitnesses claim that the deceased was already dead before being taken to the hospital, where he was declared dead. Only God knows what exactly they did to him, he said.

As of now, there has been nobody to account for the death of the “deceased.” The parties known to be involved in these murder cases have been playing a lot of games to throw the case under the carpet and are now nowhere to be found.

The university administration has since released a statement condemning the incident and has set up a committee to investigate the circumstances that led to the death of the student. The police and other law enforcement agencies have also launched an investigation into the case to identify and apprehend the perpetrators of this murderous act.

The incident has once again brought to the fore the issue of jungle justice in Nigeria, with many concerned individuals and groups calling for an end to this barbaric act. It is important to note that no matter the gravity of the offense committed, taking the law into one’s hands is not only illegal but also inhumane.

The entire management of Inside OAU Innovations extends our condolences to the family of the deceased and prays that his soul rest in peace

It is important that the culprits be brought to the book and justice served, not only for the sake of the deceased but also as a deterrent to others who may contemplate such acts in the future.

We also call on the authorities to provide adequate security measures on campus to ensure the safety of students and prevent such incidents from occurring again. May the soul of Okoli Ahize rest in peace.
