The Faculty was founded in 1967, four years after the inception of the University. It is one of the oldest faculties of education in Nigerian university. At inception, the Faculty of Education had four units: Department of Education, Department of Adult Education, Institute of Education, and School of General Studies. By 2014, the University Governing Council approved the restructuring of the Faculty into eight Departments.
