#JungleJustice – Awo Hall Executive Council Issues Press Release

It is with great sadness that we report the tragic death of a Civil Engineering student who was allegedly beaten to death by an angry mob. The incident has sent shockwaves through the OAU community and beyond, as people question how such a terrible occurrence could have happened.

In response to this heartbreaking news, all involved parties have given their accounts of what happened leading up to the student’s untimely passing. The Awo Hall of residence, which was the hostel of the deceased, has issued a press release detailing their perspective on the matter.

The press release reads as follows;

Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife.

Secretariat: Ground Floor, Block 8, Awo Hall, OAU

Ref: AWO/HEC/2122/010

At about 10:00pm on Monday (10th of April, 2023), One “Arinze” was caught by a group of people in Awolowo Hall of residence for stealing a phone and also using the bank app on the phone to make transactions and it was also observed that he went as far as messaging the relatives of the legitimate owner of the phone to request for funds.

After all of these, the entire Hall was thrown into disarray. And a mob gathered to beat him up and the so called “Arinze” tried to retaliate at the mob. He got a beating by the mob. The Executive Council of the Hall of residence then intervened by transferring the young man to the Security committee of the Union to avoid any harm and further assault from the mob.

Mr Arinze walked into the Students’ Union Building unaided and was apparently fine.

We pray for the repose of the soul of the Young man. And we as a Council stands against Jungle Justice, as it is an inhumane and wrong way of correcting evil acts in out society.

We will appreciate your cooperation in this time of utmost inconvenience by ensuring that we don’t misinform the populace

More details would be released regarding the police investigation on the matter once we get the reports.
