The Association of Resident Doctors at Obafemi Awolowo University Teaching Hospital, Ile-Ife, embarked on a warning strike on 8 am Tuesday, June 21, 2022, to 7:59 am on Thursday, June 23, 2022 due to a verbal assault.
On June 16th, a senior nurse in Female Adult Orthopaedic Ward of the hospital confined and verbally assaulted a female doctor, Dr Oluwatosin Bello.
The doctor in question had finished a procedure on a patient together with different cadres of doctors. The team had initially asked the senior nurse in question to bring a trolley but she instead pointed at it and told them to get it themselves which they did.

Once they were done with the procedure, they were to proceed urgently to the children emergency to see a patient. The verbally assaulted doctor, Dr Oluwatosin Bello, was the last to leave the room but somehow became an hostage for the perceived hostile nurse who didn’t let her leave and insisted she discarded the waste materials used for the procedure they carried out.
She (the senior nurse) hurled insult at her (female doctor) loudly and locked her in asking her to discard the waste. The doctors said they have a video evidence of this incident.

The executives of the association held a general meeting on June 17th, decided on the 48 hours strike and made their demands known to the hospital management. Their demands were:
- The hospital management should institute a fact-finding committee to look into the incident at FAOW and appropriate disciplinary measures be meted against whoever is found culpable, failure of which the house will re-examine the situation at the July 2022 OGM.
- The hospital management should come up with a document detailing the job description of all clinical staff within the next four weeks, failure of which the house will re-examine the situation at the July 2022 OGM. They believe it is in line with best global practice.
The hospital management has been given 4 weeks to meet the demands of the association.
