Factors That Determine OAU Cut-Off For Admission

Share

The Great Obafemi Awolowo University, the King of all Universities in Nigeria, is known for its prestige, integrity, and competitiveness. It’s no news that not just anyone can get admitted except those ready to work extra hard. As students graduate from the University, many still hustle to get recognized, but this doesn’t come easily. Over the years, we have noticed that OAU exams are not getting simpler; instead, the process is stricter, and the cut-off for admission gets higher. No wonder most applicants, while they get excited after filling out the JAMB form and choosing OAU as their first choice, are later disappointed when they don’t meet the requirements. The cutoff for admission to OAU is an aggregate mark set by the school, and some factors are considered, which include ;

5. ACCREDITATION

Accreditation is one of the factors that determine cut-off in every institution. Once a course loses accreditation, the year it gets accredited, the cut-off is lower than what it used to be, which another factor might affect. An example was when the University of Ibadan Pharmacy just got accreditation some years ago, the cut-off was relatively lower, a different case is the OAU faculty of Law, which was expected to be low, but factor number 4 affected it. The traffic was high, and since OAU has specific requirements and quotas, the school certainly can’t admit everyone, so the cut-off cut some students off.

4. NUMBER OF APPLICANTS

The number of applicants is another essential factor; it can be the general number of applicants or the number of department applicants. As said earlier, many students apply for different courses in OAU, and by gauging the number of students, the University might decide to increase or decrease the cut-off mark for admission. Once the general number is too high, the cut-off will be high; when it’s affecting a particular department, the department’s cut-off will be increased.

3. GENERAL PERFORMANCE

The general performance in the POST UME exam is essential too. Every student that has seen OAU past questions would know what subject combination they are likely to write hence the need for adequate preparation because the exam is not soft at all. Asides from the courses/departmental cut-off mark, if generally, seventy percent of the students fail, the cutoff will most likely drop to accommodate more students, after which some other factors are considered. Still, if we have, for instance, a higher percentage of success, it’ll increase. The same applies to departmental cut-off too.

2. CATCHMENT AREA

Another thing considered during admission to OAU is the catchment area. Catchment areas surround a university from which a larger population of students come. When OAU releases its cutoff, there are some places like Oyo, Ogun, and Ondo known as catchment areas that have lower cut off than the merit. In every institution, there is a policy of 35%  apportioned to the catchment areas for admission. If you are lucky and your state of origin falls among these catchment areas, you might get the admission you want so far as you meet up cut-off mark. Some Educationally Less Developed States such as Bayelsa, Kaduna, Gombe, and others attract 25%  of the admission process, too, and serve as a determinant for the cutoff. The remaining 45%  is for the merit list, i.e., students with the standard cutoff or above the cutoff mark.

1. OAU GENERAL CUT-OFF

Obafemi Awolowo University has its general cut-off mark too. The University considers only students that score 200 and above in JAMB before a student can apply at all for any course. They must also choose OAU as their first choice and have at least five credits in their O’level results, and they must get precisely the cutoff mark or above. Those factors determine whether a student will get admitted or not.

Many students get angry or sad when they find out that even after scoring high marks in JAMB or having distinctions in all their O’level results, they are not admitted. It didn’t just happen that way; there have been some cases of students applying for Medicine or Law with more than 250 in JAMB, and they still didn’t make it after the screening process; a defect in one of these factors might be the cause. So if you’re preparing to write the OAU POST UME, ensure that you understand how the process works and do your best.!
